Family Support & Housing Services

Helping Whole Families Survive and Prosper

In honor of April being Prevent Child Abuse month, WHEDco’s 5th Annual Walk for Children was held on Thursday, April 2nd, 2009.

Family Support

  • WHEDco’s social workers assist families in becoming emotionally and economically stable. WHEDco helps homeless families find and remain in affordable homes.

Food Pantry

  • WHEDco helps families meet their basic need for food, by providing free fresh food and groceries.

WHEDco's social workers provide supportive counseling, crisis intervention, advocacy, education, and comprehensive case management for women and their families. Our holistic approach assists families in becoming emotionally, educationally, and economically stable.

WHEDco also works closely with the Department of Homeless Services and shelters throughout the Bronx to help families move from the shelter system into affordable, permanent housing. Last year, WHEDco staff helped 368 families locate apartments, negotiate leases, enroll children in schools, secure employment, and remain in permanent housing. Following housing placement, WHEDco provides families with services for eviction prevention, emergency funding, counseling and job placement.

Survival requires not only shelter but also a reliable source of healthy food.  Consistent with WHEDco's holistic approach to breaking down the barriers to opportunity, everyone who receives food pantry items is screened to see if they can benefit from other services.

WHEDco is proud to partner with the Robin Hood Foundation to offer the Single Stop program. As a Single Stop site WHEDco provides in one location free one-on-one counseling regarding government-subsidized benefits, financial problems, tax refunds, legal issues, family services and employment training.
