WHEDco believes that successful affordable housing must be anchored in strong communities that residents can be proud of.
Our comprehensive Community Development Approach includes improving the commercial corridors in the neighborhoods where our affordable housing developments are located. Our typical practice begins with studying the commercial corridor through surveys, one-on-one conversations with local stakeholders and business owners, physical assessments of the neighborhood, and collecting demographic and socioeconomic data. We employ this data to guide our efforts to strengthen the community, and to ensure that local businesses are serving community needs.
Our Community Development team works with local residents to improve neighborhoods and make way for commerce and creativity.
Our programs include:
- Championing for improvements in street and subway safety, promoting parks and green space improvements, among other community planning and advocacy efforts
- Creating even more beautiful and vibrant spaces where families and children feel engaged, connected, and safe through creative place-affirming practices and initiatives
- Organizing events, street fairs, and other community engagement opportunities for local residents
- Supporting commercial revitalization efforts
