In the early 1990s, when WHEDco first started its after school arts program, we saw a need integrate arts, social support, and parent engagement with a rigorous education during the school day, in order to prepare students to succeed in high school, college, and beyond.
Our vision came to life in August 2015 as the South Bronx Early College Academy Charter School (SBECA) welcomed its first class of 116 6th graders.
SBECA offers students a comprehensive liberal arts education that emphasizes project-based learning and deep engagement across a range of subjects, including arts, music, and computer science.
In partnership with NYU and Lehman College, the school employs a unique hiring and teacher training model that gives students the benefit of personalized instruction from teams of experienced educators and teaching interns. WHEDco provides extended learning time, arts enrichment through the Bronx Music Heritage Center, and wrap-around support services for children and families that builds on our 20 years of work in the South Bronx.
