Rooftop garden at WHEDco's Intervale Green affordable housing development

For over 30 years, WHEDco has been a pioneer in creating beautiful, affordable housing for low-income families in the South Bronx.

Our buildings promote healthy living and are anchors for our economic development work in the surrounding communities. WHEDco currently operates three affordable housing developments.

Our affordable housing developments:

  • Urban Horizons: An adaptive re-use of a former municipal hospital, built in 1926 and gut rehabilitated in 1997, featuring 132 affordable apartments. Our ongoing retrofit serves as a model for how older, affordable multifamily buildings can go green and cut operating costs.
  • Intervale GreenThe largest affordable Energy Star-certified Multifamily High Rise building in the country, featuring 128 affordable apartments. Intervale Green’s energy usage continues to inform the standards and consumption targets for the EPA’s Energy Star Multifamily High Rise program.
  • Bronx CommonsOur third and most ambitious development yet, opened in 2020. It is a 426,000-square-foot mixed-use campus with 305 affordable, LEED-certified affordable apartments for families; the Bronx Music Hall (permanent home of the Bronx Music Heritage Center), a performance venue and archive space; a green roof; ground-level retail space, and public green space.
